Governor Asa Hutchinson announced today he is calling a special session for state legislators to consider $87.1 million in general obligation bonds under the authority of Amendment 82. The financing will go toward a Lockheed Martin manufacturing facility in East Camden that would produce the company’s new Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) developed by the U.S. Army and the Marine Corps. Lockheed Martin is one of three companies under consideration for the contract to manufacture the JLTV. A decision from the Pentagon is expected in July 2015. The JLTV will replace the Humvee, which has been used by the military since 1985.

A Thursday (April 30) POLITICO article on workforce requirements for able-bodied, working age Medicaid expansion recipients highlights my first bill introduced in the 114th Congress, H.R. 886. The State Flexibility and Workforce Requirement Act of 2015 gives states the option to create workforce requirements for individual Medicaid expansion recipients who are able-bodied, working age adults.

U.S. Senators John Boozman (R-AR) and Tom Cotton (R-AR) along with Congressmen Rick Crawford (AR-01), French Hill (AR-02), Steve Womack (AR-03) and Bruce Westerman (AR-04) sent a letter to President Obama last week urging him to resolve contract negotiations between the dock workers union and shipowners at West Coast ports because of the negative economic consequences it’s having on Arkansas businesses. Over the weekend, the President sent Labor Secretary Tom Perez to help the sides reach an agreement.

The first big jobs announcement for Gov. Asa Hutchinson took place Friday (Jan. 23) in Clarksville. It is there that HanesBrands is adding 120 jobs as part of a $1.4 million investment in the building and equipment that brings manufacturing jobs back to the U.S.
