Arkansas officials tour Scranton Elementary School
Students at Scranton Elementary School were treated to a surprise visit from Arkansas officials Monday morning.
U.S. Rep. Bruce Westerman traveled to the school to observe its Science of Reading program, which identifies dyslexic students early so they can get the specialized learning they need. Arkansas Education Commissioner Johnny Key also participated in the tour.
Jennifer Hampton, literacy and dyslexia specialist at Guy Fenter Education Service Cooperative, said the Scranton Science of Reading program starts children with the sounds of the English language then moves on to how those sounds are spelled. This is followed by learning to read those sounds and then learning how to write and spell.
