As Veterans fight for our freedoms, we must continue to fight for them. On Tuesday, Congress passed legislation that will do just that.

S. 1094, the Department of Veterans Affairs Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act of 2017, will modernize the flawed civil service rules which have obstructed America’s veterans from receiving the proper care they deserve. Two examples of recent abuses of VA employees include having engaged in armed robbery and performing surgery while intoxicated. These blatant failures of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs further highlight the lack of accountability and necessity for reform.

According to the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, this legislation would:

  • Create an expedited, streamlined process to remove, demote or suspend any VA employee for performance or misconduct;
  • Provide expanded protection for whistleblowers; and
  • Bar the VA from using removal authority if the employee has an open whistleblower complaint/case with the Office of Special Counsel.

This bill will ensure that those who work on behalf of America’s veterans always act with highest moral integrity, our veterans deserve nothing less.
